Abbotsford Traditional Middle School and Dumay School in Haiti: Feed The Body To Reach The Brain

A school in Abbotsford, BC has ‘adopted’ a school in Dumay, Haiti. Both schools have 450 students. Through this Adopt-a-School project, Abbotsford Traditional Middle School is meeting the Abbotsford School District’s Vision – point #2 “To improve social responsibility of all students.” as well, the Grade 6 British Columbia Curriculum Prescribed Learning Outcome AF “It is expected that students will implement a plan of action to address a selected local or global problem or issue.”

Students are learning about some of the struggles children in developing countries face on a daily basis. They are learning that many children do not have the opportunity to go to school and they are focusing on the fact that many children have only one meal per day and sometimes that has to last them two days in lean times. Statistics indicate that a meal program can increase school attendance by 100% and provides children with a much improved capacity to learn. That is why the students, teachers, and parents of Abbotsford Traditional Middle School are involving themselves in creative fundraising activities to provide the funds for a school lunch program at the school in Dumay, Haiti.
